Jakarta is the capital city of the Republic of Indonesia. The first mention of Jakarta in the historical records was during the 4th century; at this time it was a Hindu settlement and port. Since this time, the city had been variously claimed by the Indianized kingdom of Tarumanegara, the Hindu Kingdom of Sunda, the Muslim Sultanate of Banten, the Dutch East Indies, the Empire of Japan and finally, Indonesia.
Jakarta has been known under several names: Sunda Kelapa, during the Kingdom of Sunda period (669–1527); Jayakarta, Djajakarta or Jacatra, during the short period of the Banten Sultanate (1527–1619); Batavia, under the Dutch colonial empire; and when Batavia fell to the Japanese (March 5, 1942). The Dutch formally surrendered to the Japanese occupation forces on March 9, 1942, and rule of the colony was transferred to Japan. The city was renamed "Jakarta".
